Delightful Brain Chemicals – Endorphins

December 21, 2023

That cozy feeling of comfort, pleasure, and euphoria that you can experience when you are surrounded by things you like come from the brain chemicals that transmit enjoyment and contentment and are called endorphins. If you are blessed with high levels of these naturally comforting substances that are more powerful than morphine or heroin, you take great pleasure in life. Many things delight you. Even when painful things happen, you recover well, without too many emotional scars or prolonged suffering. Endorphins light that special smile on your face when you think about pleasant things like chocolate, a movie, a book, a dress or beautiful places you have been to or dream of going or people you like and love. Massages and baths feel heavenly because the nerves in the skin can trigger a release of endorphins. Many different foods can raise endorphin levels, too.

Catecholamines. What is that?

November 29, 2023

Feeling energized, upbeat, and alert? It likely means that you are high in catecholamines. If your catecholamines are running low, you will crash into a lethargic slump. You’ll be craving sweets and caffeine, feeling bored, unfocused, low on energy, and apathetic. So what are these catecholamines? “Cats” are hormones made by your adrenal glands – two small glands located above your kidneys. The main types of catecholamines are dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Most of us have heard of adrenaline – the fight or flight chemical that helps us fight for our life in the face of danger – either real or perceived.  All three are part of a defense mechanism designed to make you alert, sharp, and focused – mentally, physically, and emotionally – when needed.

What is GABA? Meet your relaxation neurotransmitter.

November 8, 2023

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is your brain’s natural Valium. Actually, Valium is one of many tranquilizers designed to mimic or amplify GABA’s naturally calming effects. If you’re high in GABA – you’re relaxed and stress-free. If there’s a gap in your GABA – you’ll be wired, stressed, and overwhelmed. 😵‍💫 GABA can have a relaxing effect on your entire body because it can instantly neutralize the surge of stress chemicals. It is the body’s most important inhibitory neurotransmitter, which means it lowers the activity of neural cells in the brain and central nervous system, having the effect of moving the brain and the body into lower gear.
GABA is unique in that it is both an amino acid (a building block of protein) and a potent mood enhancer. Too much stress can deplete our GABA supplies.

Can Halloween Be Therapeutic?

October 27, 2023

Generally, fear is not an emotion we seek to experience. Except.. every year at the end of October. This is the time when we welcome scary sights and even create them around our dwellings. So what gives? Why does death and scariness suddenly become fun and not something to be afraid of? And can having zombies coming out of the ground as part of the seasonal culture be good for us?

Gratitude

We are often told how important it is to have gratitude in our life. How more meaningful life can feel if we experience gratitude on a regular basis. And it seems that we have become so aware of it that most of us take real effort to feel grateful for everything we have.
